Rent Control Hearings

The Jersey City Council Commenced rent control hearings on August 25th with the objective of modernizing its rent control ordinance and updating application of the law through its rent leveling ordinance.

The agenda, built largely by its Chairman Councilman James Solomon on a rent control study he released in May, outlined a rent control marketplace that functions substantially differently than portrayed in the study and the initial meeting.  Subsequent meetings have revealed not only the good intentions of the Council but the high functioning of the council – in particular the organization of this series by Councilman Solomon – in defining issues and solutions.

Features of the Jersey City Rent Control Ordinance

Tenant Protections Under State and Local Law

a) Ensures protections against harassment and eviction.

b) Every tenant has the right to a perpetual tenancy. Unless they are using the apartment illegally or they are woefully behind on their rent, existing tenants can be here through the rest of their lives with no threat to their residency.

c) Tenants are protected by the Department of Housing Code Enforcement, which assures habitability conditions. If anyone is concerned about a lack of attention to the conditions of an apartment, then they should call the department for an inspection. The department has the right to punish landlords and enforce the upkeep of every apartment.
